Elena works at CMCC developing numerical model for Search and Rescue Operations (SAR) in the SANI area based on Lagrangian transport of passive drifters. The model employs simulations of large ensemble of floating objects with known drift characteristics. The main objective of the model is to provide a search area forecast in terms of probability densities for location of the object. After a PhD in Physics at the Center for Nonlinear Science, Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), Elena worked on nonlinear models for systems of biological oscillators at Max Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems (Germany). From 2010 to 2012 she worked as postdoctoral fellow at the Biological Station at Helgoland, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Germany) and studied the impacts of climate change on shelf ecosystem in the German Bight, North Sea.
